Index Tabs
Index tabs divide manuals, reports, proposals, training materials, catalogs, and presentation binders into clear sections. Instead of searching page by page, readers can move directly to the information they need. The strongest tab systems feel like part of the document rather than an added accessory, where label length, section order, color, spacing, paper weight, and binding all affect how easily the finished piece can be used. Make the right page easier to reach.

The Tab Sequence Should Follow the Way Readers Search for Information
Short labels, consistent wording, and a logical order make the system easier to scan. Color can help distinguish categories, but the hierarchy should still make sense without relying on color alone.
Tabs Also Need to Coordinate With the Full Document
- Number of tabs — the practical count depends on document size, tab depth, label length, binding, and desired spacing, and a large number of sections may require multiple tab banks or a revised labeling system.
- Printed sides — printing on both sides can make labels easier to read when moving forward or backward through the document, with the layout accounting for binding direction and intended use.
- Color — color can separate categories, highlight priority sections, or coordinate with an existing brand system, provided labels remain readable and organized.
- Tab and divider content — tabs and divider pages can include logos, section titles, page numbers, or instructions, staying simple enough to support quick navigation.
- Binding method — binders, coil binding, Wire-O, and other formats that let pages open and turn easily all work with tabs, as long as the binding leaves enough clearance.
- Document integration — page size, section order, cover width, paper weight, and existing artwork are reviewed together so labels stay visible and pages turn comfortably.
- Assembly — interior pages, tabs, collating, and covers can be produced and assembled together so every divider appears in the correct location.
